Yarra River Project – Macro-Invertebrates

Working in partnership with Maroondah Council, Melbourne Water, Waterwatch and the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group, 3rd Croydon Scouts are actively working to improve the health of the Yarra River.

Recently, Melbourne Water and 3rd Croydon Scout Group held an event focussed upon learning and undertaking Macro-Invertebrate sampling and analysis. The many varieties of Macro-Invertebrates which are found in our Rivers and Waterways are important indicators of overall River health and information from surveying for the ‘Bugs’ is used to inform the Waterwatch Program.

“Through a ‘Hands on’ approach Scouts enjoyed looking for, counting and learning about the various species they encountered. ‘Learning by Doing’ is the Scouts way and the kids came away from the day full of excitement and stories about some of the unusual creatures they found” Frank Courtney – LIC 3rd Croydon.

With their new skills, the Scouts from 3rd Croydon will be undertaking further sampling and Macro-Invertebrate analysis as they undertake future litter removal expeditions along the Yarra.

3rd Croydon is proud to be supporting the Waterwatch program and greatly appreciates the support of Melbourne Water in developing new skills in our Youth members.

This project was funded through the Victorian Government’s Cleaner Yarra River and Port Phillip Bay Litter Hotspots Program.

Scouts care for our precious environment!

3rd Croydon Scout Group – Yarra River Litter removal project.

Working in partnership with Maroondah Council, Melbourne Water, Waterwatch and the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group, 3rd Croydon Scouts are actively working to improve the health of the Yarra River.

Scouts from 3rd Croydon are taking to the river in canoes to seek out and remove litter, find ‘hotspots’ where litter accumulates after rains and to take samples of water to measure the health of the aquatic ecosystem.

3rd Croydon is targeting a local section of the Yarra from Wonga Park through to Warrandyte. This is a very popular stretch of the river and features many recreational areas including Wittons Reserve, Jumping creek Reserve, Mt Lofty Park and Warrandyte State Park.

The removal of accumulated litter and debris as well as the identification and reporting of river health issues in the area will be a positive contribution to the amenity and value of the Yarra for the entire community.

Group Leader-in-Charge Frank Courtney sees the project as a model for community organisations to obtain much needed support in building their capability for service delivery while also delivering positive community and environmental outcomes.

Getting out and having adventures is a big part of what Scouting is all about, and the opportunity to combine a fun activity with learning new skills and looking after our Environment is a great way to serve the Local community. Partnering with other Groups and Organisations is a great way to reach your shared goals

Scouts will learn and practice canoeing and safety skills while exploring the many beautiful locations along the River. Retrieved litter and materials will be disposed of and recycled appropriately. Scouts will also learn to sample and recognise the many aquatic invertebrates found in the River and use this information in supporting the Waterwatch program.

This project was funded through the Victorian Government’s Cleaner Yarra River and Port Phillip Bay Litter Hotspots Program.

3rd Croydon Receives Chief Commissioner’s Award

I’m really very happy to announce that we have been awarded a Chief Commissioner’s award! Our growth in membership over the past year seems to have been noticed at Scouts Victoria.

There is no secret here – our success over the past couple of years is entirely due to the efforts of our Leaders, Parents and of course the wonderful Youth members who make 3rd Croydon a powerhouse of Scouting in Maroondah!

Clean Up Australia 2014

Here’s some tired but proud 3rd Croydon people after another big effort cleaning up around Croydon.

A Scout cares for the environment

“A Scout cares for the environment” – part of the Scout Law

It’s great to see the whole community of 3rd Croydon getting involved in these activities – Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, Leaders and family all pitched in to collect approximately 200kg of rubbish plus some larger items like a truck tyre, a bike, a wheelie bin, a scooter and rolls of carpet. It was a great effort and the Croydon Wetlands area looks much better and is safer as a result.

Great work!

ASM Recipients

Congratulations to Ben and Amy who recently received their Australian Scout Medallion, the highest award in the Scout section.

Congratulations Amy and Ben!

Congratulations Amy and Ben!

At 3rd Croydon Scout Group, we celebrate every achievement – trying something new, putting extra effort into an activity and pushing yourself beyond your previous efforts are all things that we value in Scouting. The Scout Award Scheme helps to recognise certain achievements through the awarding of badges, with a peak award for each section requiring a consistent effort over the young person’s time in the section.

To receive the Australian Scout Medallion, a scout must complete the following:

  • Participate in a Scout Leadership Course;
  • Demonstrate an active leadership role in Scouting;
  • Achieve the Adventurer Cord

Ben and Amy have been active and enthusiastic in everything they’ve done in the Scout section, working hard and providing a great example to the younger scouts. Well done!

Maroondah Festival

The 3rd Croydon Gate

The 3rd Croydon Gate Construction

Did you come and visit 3rd Croydon Scouts at the Maroondah Festival?

In the food area near the music stage, our committee and parent volunteers sizzled hundreds of sausages in a brilliant fundraising effort that will go towards hall repairs and improvements.  Meanwhile our leaders used their amazing construction skills to put together a bunch of activities that were enjoyed by Joeys, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers from 3rd Croydon and other groups, as well as lots of visiting families.

Covered Bridge

Covered Bridge

It was a great demonstration of the skills you can learn and the fun you can have in Scouting. Lots of people stopped to talk to the leaders and youth members there about their Scouting experiences and we handed out lots of fliers to interested parents. We’re looking forward to seeing many of them at the hall for another taste of Scouting in Croydon.

Mud Bash 2013

Some of the leaders and younger members went up to visit Ken Tickell Rover Crew at Mudbash open day, to see camping the way Rovers do it:
