Cuboree – The Adventure Continues

Yes, the Adventure sure did continue, and so did the rain!! There was mud, glorious mud and everyone had a fantastic time. 3rd Croydon Cub Scouts joined Cubs from 7th Ringwood and 1st Maroondah to make up our Cuboree Pack. We shared our camp site, with the other two Cuboree packs from the Maroondah District.

Maritime Museum Visit – Ahoy there!

Well what an adventure! Joey and Cub Scouts from 3rd Croydon joined with Joey Scouts from 3rd Heathmont for a day of fun, and pirate adventure. Travelling by train and tram into the city, and a short walk to the Maritme Museum and the Polly Woodside. There was tug of war, and a treasure hunt on the ship. A great day enjoyed by all.

Cub Tri Region Forum

Two cubs from the Maroondah district were asked to participate in the Tri Region Cub Forum. Dylan from 3rd Croydon and Rachael from 1 st Maroondah went and represented the Cubs from our District. The Cubs participated in the forums, finding out what cubs like, what they want to see more of, their thoughts on going up to Scouts, what kind of activities they would like to see available to Cub scouts. It wasnt all hard work though, as always there was still lots of time for games, and getting to know the other Cubs. Scouts came and cooked a campfire meal for the Cubs – very impressive!

Grey Wolf Presentation

A few weeks ago, 3rd Croydon awarded our first Grey Wolf award in six years! Connor Parlevliet worked hard, especially over the last summer holidays, to complete all the tasks required to earn the highest award in the Cub section of Scouting. Members from the Cub, Scout and Venturer sections were on hand to witness the presentation and congratulate him on his effort and achievement.

District Cub Leader Keego presented the badge to Connor. Keego explained that not every cub gets the Grey Wolf award, it’s usually an older cub that earns it, and you have to work hard to get it. She said “It’s a cub you can always go to and ask for advice because they’ll give you the right advice.”

To get to the Grey Wolf cubs need to earn achievement badges in each category, one special interest badge, and their Gold Boomerang. As well as this, in the past twelve months they need to participate in a variety of outdoor and inter-pack activities, attend two pack councils, plan and lead a hike, and prepare a resource for the pack that can be used to teach the younger cubs. It is a great honour to be awarded the Grey Wolf, and our group is especially proud of Connor’s achievement. On the night, Connor’s family set up a display of much of the work he had done to meet the requirements, and many of the cubs were looking curiously and wondering if they were Grey Wolf material. Several other cubs are already working towards the Grey Wolf so we look forward to more proud presentations like this.

Bats! Yarra Bend Hike

Two Cubs set off on the Yarra Bend Hike. It was a lovely Autumn day, great day for a hike. Mild weather, only a smidge of rain. Well done, another 10km added to your Walkabout tally. We checked out the huge Flying Fox colony.

Maroondah District Camp – Geewizardry @ Mudwarts

On the 18th of March we set off on our Maroondah District Cub Camp. It was a weekend packed full of Geewizardry and Fun. Friday night the students (cubs) arrived at Mudwarts (Gilwell), already for a weekend of fun, adventure and a little magic.

Saturday morning saw the cubs off to their lessons, wand making, archery, making GeeWhizzFizz and slime, exploding sandwich bags, playing Quidditch and much more. On Saturday night came the feast, where all of the cubs from the district sat down together for a meal dressed in their wizard finery.

Then off to campfire circle to join together with the City of Knox district cubs, for a singalong around the campfire. Sunday morning came and with it more magic, with the fashions on the field, and helpful spell writing (to cook a yummy dinner in 5 minutes was a favourite). To finish off the students (cubs) had to escape the chamber of secrets (the gauntlet). Check out our pics, what a great camp!

Cuboree 2010

Well, Cuboree 2010 is over now. We had a spectacular time. It rained, it was cold and muddy, but the activities and food were excellent. The leaders and parent helpers were awesome, and everyone enjoyed themselves.

Lillydale Lake Night Hike

Last Friday night, when all was dark and still, seven brave explorer cub scouts set off on a night hike around Olinda wetlands and Lillydale Lake. Armed with torches and excitement we walked around the tracks, on the lookout for wildlife and adventure. We spotted a possum and some rabbits. We heard the sounds of crickets, frogs and water rushing over rocks. It was a great fun hike. Thanks to all the parents who joined us, it was great to see so many of you on our hike. Thanks to the parent helper for going and getting the well earned snack at the end. Well done to the Cubs, they clocked up some more kilometres toward their Walkabout badges.
