Scout Hike
Posted in : Scouts | November 14, 2011
3rd Croydon sent two patrols to Scout Hike this year. As well as doing their best as always, and having a great time in the process, both patrols earned awards.
There were 24 activities available during the hike and scouts combined Leadership, Planning, Attitude & Enthusiasm and Overall Achievement to earn activity points at each one. Rory’s patrol (Rory, Jordann, Brad and Connor) earned a Bronze, an exceptional effort from three first timers and a first time PL. Aiden’s patrol (Adam, Aidan, Ben and Josh), all experienced Scout Hike participants, earned Gold and blitzed their nearest opponents by 500 points.
Well done to both patrols!

Time will also be spent trying to finish off some badge work for everyone.
Food Can Donations for The Dining Room Croydon
Posted in : Group, Venturers | July 25, 2011
As support for our Local Community the Venturers have started to volunteer at “The Dining Room” at St. Johns Church in Croydon which provides a hot meal once a week for homeless people and for those who are finding it very hard to make ends meet.
To involve all sections from our Group we would like to organize a “Can Drive” to collect donations to help them in providing this service.
They are specifically needing cans of fruit as this is seen as a “big treat” for the families who receive them.
We will be providing a box in the hall that you can put your donations into. This is a great example of Scouts doing more for their community!
Grey Wolf Presentation
Posted in : Cubs | May 1, 2011
A few weeks ago, 3rd Croydon awarded our first Grey Wolf award in six years! Connor Parlevliet worked hard, especially over the last summer holidays, to complete all the tasks required to earn the highest award in the Cub section of Scouting. Members from the Cub, Scout and Venturer sections were on hand to witness the presentation and congratulate him on his effort and achievement.
District Cub Leader Keego presented the badge to Connor. Keego explained that not every cub gets the Grey Wolf award, it’s usually an older cub that earns it, and you have to work hard to get it. She said “It’s a cub you can always go to and ask for advice because they’ll give you the right advice.”
To get to the Grey Wolf cubs need to earn achievement badges in each category, one special interest badge, and their Gold Boomerang. As well as this, in the past twelve months they need to participate in a variety of outdoor and inter-pack activities, attend two pack councils, plan and lead a hike, and prepare a resource for the pack that can be used to teach the younger cubs. Here are the full requirements for the Grey Wolf award.
It is a great honour to be awarded the Grey Wolf, and our group is especially proud of Connor’s achievement. On the night, Connor’s family set up a display of much of the work he had done to meet the requirements, and many of the cubs were looking curiously and wondering if they were Grey Wolf material. Several other cubs are already working towards the Grey Wolf so we look forward to more proud presentations like this.

Jamboree 2013
Posted in : Uncategorized | April 28, 2011
The 23rd Australian Scout Jamboree dates have been set for 2nd- 12th January 2013. Venue: Maryborough QUEENSLAND www.aj2013.scouts.com.au
The group committee has organised an information night at the Scout Hall on Friday 6th May at 9pm (for approx half hour). The scout leaders have all attended Jamborees in the past, and can tell you the scouts are in for an awesome time. They will pop into the meeting to answer any questions, or feel free to speak to them at any time.
The other purpose of the meeting is to establish a parents sub-committee which will be responsible for organisation of fundraising events over the next 18 months. In the past the cost of the Jamboree has been fairly expensive and fundraising efforts for the last Jamboree helped parents of scouts attending to alleviate the total cost. At this stage final costs have not been advised, however this is the time to get started.
Don’t forget, there are minimum requirements all scouts must meet to be eligible to attend a jamboree, these are:
- 10 nights under canvas with 4 consecutive nights (in the scout section, cub experience does not count)
- achieve their Pioneer (big red) badge, that’s 3 target badges, a patrol activity and a challenge badge
There’ll be more information over the coming months, but if your Scout (or older cub who will be eligible) is interested in going, please come to this introductory meeting!
Maroondah District Camp – Geewizardry @ Mudwarts
Posted in : Cubs | April 3, 2011
On the 18th of March we set off on our Maroondah District Cub Camp. It was a weekend packed full of Geewizardry and Fun. Friday night the students (cubs) arrived at Mudwarts (Gilwell), already for a weekend of fun, adventure and a little magic.
Saturday morning saw the cubs off to their lessons, wand making, archery, making GeeWhizzFizz and slime, exploding sandwich bags, playing Quidditch and much more. On Saturday night came the feast, where all of the cubs from the district sat down together for a meal dressed in their wizard finery.
Then off to campfire circle to join together with the City of Knox district cubs, for a singalong around the campfire. Sunday morning came and with it more magic, with the fashions on the field, and helpful spell writing (to cook a yummy dinner in 5 minutes was a favourite). To finish off the students (cubs) had to escape the chamber of secrets (the gauntlet). Check out our pics, what a great camp!
Venturers in Vic Flood Areas
Posted in : Uncategorized | March 11, 2011
On joining the Scouting movement, young people promise to Help Other People. Along with venturers from around the state, our 3CV venturer unit put their Scout Promise into action during the recent flooding in Victoria. Venturers were involved in many aspects of the town’s recovery, from doorknocking with Red Cross supplies, to stripping and cleaning flood affected houses, and clearing debris from public areas. They even took on a project to provide a matinee and evening movie session in the town’s flood damaged theatre, stripping waterlogged seats and fittings, and sourcing generators and refreshments for the occasion. 3rd Croydon Venturer leader Michael Smedley was there, and spoke to the local paper, getting his photo in there as well, along with Kerry and Kate.
There’s also a great write up from Mike in the Venturer newsletter Interchange, along with some more pictures of Scouting at work in the flood affected town!
